Acupuncture helps IVF by reducing stress levels, enhancing blood flow in the uterus, regulating the hormone level, thickening the endometrial lining, supporting follicular development, supporting implantation, etc. It also increases pregnancy and birth rates as well as modulates the immune factors (cytokines).

Before you plan to do acupuncture/Chinese Herbal Medicine for IVF support, we suggest a 3–6-month preparation time to optimise your health. After embryo transfer, acupuncture helps improve blood circulation on the endometrium to reduce the discomfort from the transfer procedure and also calm the uterus to support a pregnancy

After embryo transfer and getting a positive result of pregnancy, it is recommended a weekly acupuncture treatment till week 12. Research shows first trimester acupuncture helps to stimulate blood flow to the placenta and nourish the baby. It also strengthens progesterone levels and eases the discomfort in the first trimester such as poor appetite, tiredness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, headache, and anxiety.

The best time to prepare for labour is from week 36; we recommend a course of 4 sessions of acupuncture once-a-week treatment. This helps cervical ripening and dilation, shortens the duration of labour, reduces caesarean sections, and enhances the energy level for labour. If the baby is overdue, acupuncture helps to release hormones such as oxytocin and prostaglandins which encourage the baby to move downward in the birth canal.

After labour delivery, the mother’s qi (energy) and blood are depleted. Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment help to restore energy levels and remove old or stasis blood discharge, stop abdominal bleeding, help insufficient lactation, and postnatal depression.

According to the CDC, for women below the age of 35, the average success rate for the first cycle of IVF is around 31%. When the age is older, the success rate drops dramatically.
